Principally, there will be two 'directions' of responses to the outputs of Steps
1 and 2:
- externally: designing and implementing a stakeholder engagement process,
- internally: building capacity on issues; reviewing existing governance and business
plans; identifying responsibilities on issues that are revealed in Step 1 but have
not had a 'home' yet in the company; and other management responses to increased
knowledge.
The first is addressed here, while Step 4 focuses on the latter.
After a strategic decision with regard to future stakeholder engagement has been
taken, we also provide support for creating an action plan that sets out clear principles
and goals, building on the agreed objectives, and defines succinct steps without
compromising the ability to flexibly adapt as the process moves forward. We support
companies to develop action plans with SMART targets, which set out what is going
to happen, who is going to do it, when it is going to be done by and how achievement
will be measured.

Designing and implementing the engagement process could include, for example:
|
- internal capacity building and training:
|
how to conduct a stakeholder analysis; how to approach stakeholders; how to maintain
ongoing communication with stakeholders.
|
- bridge building to external stakeholders:
|
by introducing the company to relevant organisations and networks; by helping build
relationships with potential participants in stakeholder dialogues.
|
- facilitating consultation meetings and/or dialogue processes:
|
facilitating consultations with internal and/or external stakeholders; brokering
partnerships with stakeholders; supporting the development and management of partnerships.
|
- supporting the internal team:
|
advising the company's team that coordinates stakeholder engagement regarding process
planning, scope, formats, facilitation, recoring and reporting; providing regular
mentoring and/or ad hoc superivision.
|
- monitoring the stakeholder engagement process and evaluating its outcomes:
|
developing a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) process, including indicators and
possible consultative elements that include stakeholders in M&E measures; providing
external M&E; supporting appropriate reporting to the Board, to stakeholders
and the wider public (sustainability/ CSR reports).
